What A Girl Wants? (26 May 2006) I could say that this series addresses issues of identity: that the manipulation of the movie stills is meant to underscore the convolution of identity on multiple levels. On the surface, in the film, the character Daphne, played by actress Amanda Bynes, "stifles her naturally vibrant personality, refashions herself as a proper debutante and plunges into a whirlwind of British social events" in order to prevent the downfall of her long-lost father's political career, but "soon realizes she doesn't like the person she's becoming in the process." Furthermore, it is a work of fiction. Who is it we're observing? Daphne, or Amanda? It's only partially true to say that Bynes is Daphne. Bynes plays Daphne. Bynes tends to pursue roles reflective of her own character, so she is Daphne to some degree. But these roles are a facet of her personality. Yes, I could say all of those things. In reality, this set was just a serendipitous result of faulty wiring caused by neighbors trying to steal cable, boredom, and my happening to have a camera in my pocket while an unremarkable teen movie was on The N. The phenomenon, called "tiling" by the cable company, while ordinarily irritating, was visually interesting to me. |
