Still alive, but..

So after I came back from my officially announced hiatus, I did not update for two weeks after. /facepalm So instead of stewing in guilt, I will continue to try and post every Wednesday, whether it be an actual comic or just a doodle from my sketchbook. The problem I’ve encountered was that I got so focused on working on my doll stuff that I stopped sketching altogether, so I lost my rhythm. 😛

Hopefully I find balance again, in all areas of my life.

Congratulations, President Obama, for securing a second term!  I think I would have liked to see a Jill Stein presidency, but no third-party candidate has held office since the 1850s.  It’s terribly unfair that the debates are not open to other parties.  What’s up with that?  Anyway, he’s not such a bad guy.  You have to like a dude who makes it home for dinner with his family, every night, even if he did have to spend his wedding anniversary on a double date with the Romneys.

I know people have been asking where all the hope and change went over the last four years, but give the guy a break.  I still have hope, and I think there is change, albeit slow.  Humankind is pretty resilient on the whole, so unless there’s an asteroid or a nuclear war, I don’t think I’m in a terribly bad place in history.  Not the best place, mind you, but my husband was in London for a week last month and I, in California, held his face in my hands (via iPad) and had a conversation with him almost every one of those days.  When I was a kid and my dad was deployed for half a year at a time, my mom didn’t have that luxury.  If I were her, I’d have been going crazy.  Heck, Ben and I wouldn’t be allowed to marry legally, if it were the 1960s.

I kind of wince when people glorify the past, because I’m acutely aware that if I were to exist in any previous era, I’d either be indentured, enslaved, or living in a grass hut and squatting out babies on an island plagued by monsoons.  Or dead.  Now is a pretty good time for me.  I know not everyone is so lucky, but I think that awareness might be key to progress.  It’s mind-blowing how there can be such wealth and poverty.

I am ramping up preparation for my doll show in a couple of weeks, so Thirty Something will be on hiatus for the next couple of weeks. Regularly scheduled programming is slated to resume on November 7.

No comic today. I wasted my buffer, so here’s a scan out of my sketchbook of a doodle of the cast.  Beau and Annie have yet to make an appearance, but they will.. eventually.  Hopefully I get my act together and have something next week. 🙂

Go Traditional

Roughly five years ago, I did a completely uncharacteristic thing and invited a Stranger from the internet to the Halloween-themed housewarming party my then-housemates and I were throwing.  A week later, San Diego was swallowed in a fiery conflagration.  I am aware that “fiery conflagration” is redundant- that’s how crazy the fires were.  Thankfully, the house and everyone I knew and even that guy I didn’t know all that well were safe. A week after that, said guy asked if it was okay to call me his girlfriend. I said “yes.”

Roughly four years ago, Stranger-turned-Boyfriend proposed.  I said “yes.”  I indicated I would prefer a small wedding, with probably no more than 30 people if we could help it.

Three years ago, Boyfriend-turned-Fiance turned Husband.  That 30 people? Turned into 300.  With loads of help from friends and family, Ben and I were wed in a lavish rock-and-roll ceremony.

Although the wedding was amazing, it was not, in fact, The Happiest Day Of My Life.  It was probably that day at the time, but I’ve been happier since.  I’m still becoming.  How can I not? I’m spending the rest of my life with my best friend and most favorite person.  No, not “spending.”  We are building our lives together.

Ben is loving, kind, generous, and patient (which is extra important when dealing with the likes of me).  He can make me laugh almost no matter what mood I’m in.  And no one can deny the man’s got a great head of hair.  Best of all? I have my very own personal IT guy! Just kidding.  Sort of. 😉

I am incredibly lucky to have someone so wonderful in my life, let alone to have married him!

Ben, Happy 3rd Wedding Anniversary! I love you! I LURRRRRVE YOUUUU! (Even when you are glued to your MMOs, you mostly know when to quit.)
